Meet Cara, a natural dyer and artist working in New York City. Cara creates one of a kind textiles only using natural dye stuffs such as botanicals, plant matter, minerals, non-toxic metals and food wastes. By using ancient shibori techniques and bundle dyeing, she transforms each textile into its very own story. We caught up to hear how Cara carved out a place for herself in the textile arts world.

How did you start your career as a natural dyer & artisan?
I was first drawn to the medium in college, I was mesmerized by the alchemy of the process and the vast capacity of plants being able to produce color. I started by dyeing T-shirts in the basement of my friend's vintage store in Brooklyn, and it snowballed into the studio I have today.

What's your favorite part about the New York creative community?
It's more inviting and friendly than you would imagine. New York gets a bad wrap for being rude, but the vibrancy of the creatives here, and their capacity to share resources is what inspires me daily.

What's inspiring you right now?
Currently I've been researching milk paints and their applications for home treatments. Making paint from raw earth pigments is my next frontier.
