How did you start your small-batch kombucha brand, Heirloom Provisions?
I started Heirloom Provisions amidst the pandemic and stay-at-home order as means of keeping my hands busy and mind at ease. I'm not one to half-ass anything, so what started out as a hobby to make my own booch turned into a full-fledged business idea operated out of my kitchen. Since officially launching earlier this year, I've been fortunate enough to shift operations from my Bed-Stuy apartment to our very own nano-brewery in Gowanus. I say "our" but it's really just myself running the entire operation from brewing and bottling to packing and shipping. I've always been the type of person who is motivated by a challenge, I'm a Sagittarius, what can I say?
What's your favorite part about the New York creative community?
I don't come from a food or beverage background and I oftentimes find myself on the outside looking in when it comes to the NYC creative food scene. And that sounds sad, but isn't meant to! I look up to this community—their resilience and unmatched motivation to spearhead NYC culture through food and drink. I find it incredibly inspiring and encouraging—it's what keeps me going with Heirloom.
What's inspiring you right now? There are a ton of really cool beverage brands overseas (Copenhagen and Berlin specifically) who are taking such a unique approach to the beverage space that almost feels second nature to them. I want to bring that here—and you'll see that from Heirloom very soon...
