Meet Kate, a Brooklyn-based ceramicist whose playful works make our hearts swoon. From functional dinnerware, to fun striped lamps, Kate’s work just feels like it already has the perfect place in your home...fingers crossed the piece you want isn’t sold yet.

How did you start your ceramics line, Okay Good Ceramics?
After moving to Brooklyn (previously Seattle) I knew I didn’t want to give up my love for clay and was lucky enough to find a studio on the same subway line as my apartment. (So important for carrying fragile items when you don’t own a car, haha!) I got back into my groove and thought a fun way to document my new work would be to create an Instagram for it. Okay Good Ceramics stemmed from my insecurities that my art was at best “okay” (not really worth documenting) and turned into an excellent opportunity to explore my personal creative style and share it with my community.

What’s your favorite part about the New York creative community?
The New York creative community is incredibly supportive and inspiring. I’m forever grateful to artists who have given love, feedback, and shared my work with their audiences. Artists from all different mediums are putting out jaw dropping work, and being around so many creatives, especially queer creatives makes me feel supported and seen. I’m excited for the post-pandemic day when I can visit these amazing artists and their work in person.

What’s inspiring you right now?The change of weather is really inspiring my clay work right now. During this past pandemic winter, I was making a lot of colorful mugs (for hot toddies) and striped lamps to try and brighten my New York apartment from the gloomy weather and lack of social interaction. Now that the sun is soaking up my space, I’ve started to revisit the soft neutrals that I’ve embraced for most of my time as a ceramist. I’m looking forward to more warm spring days where I can open the window in my studio and fuel my optimism for the future.
