What led you to your career in the art world?
I took a circuitous route in my career. Working in fashion while also getting an MA in Media Studies with a focus in film making, my real introduction to the art world began when I met Naomi Clark and Noah Spencer, two artists from Boulder, Colorado. Naomi was getting her MFA at Pratt at the time, and Noah was making furniture at Uhuru. Naomi invited me to help curate her thesis show of abstract painting and sculpture, which was my first time working as a curator. Noah showed me his abstract paintings and wooden furniture and the three of us — Naomi, Noah and I — started hanging out and talking extensively about art. It was a very exciting time for us. We decided to start Fort Makers because I was amazed by their talent and realized I wanted to collaborate with both of them artistically. I had all these ideas about what we could make and the shows we could put on.
How did it feel being selected as the curatorial partner for Ace Brooklyn's AIR program and how did you choose each artist/designer for the residencies?
It felt like kismet, because we have always wanted to work with Ace — their style has inspired us for a long time. We chose the theme New York Craft because we have worked with so many artists from within this arena. Specifically, we selected these 4 artists — Shino Takeda, Minjae Kim, Janie Korn and Margot DeMarco — because we have worked with them previously and wanted this new space and opportunity to further collaborate. They each work in different mediums too, so each show will be quite different from the others.
