Well firstly I’m not a chef —but thank you for that compliment. I’m an experienced home cook who loves food and entertaining. For many years when I helmed a my namesake fashion brand, cooking was the thing that kept my feet on the ground—and over the years my love of food, ingredients and flavors has come to the forefront.
Family Style is inspired by the Cantonese flavors I grew up with combined with the bright, seasonal food of my native Bay Area. It’s in many ways a tribute to my Grandmother and my Mom—two amazing women who have influenced my love of food and everything that it means.
I’ve been so welcome into the culinary community-it’s truly been something wonderful—very much the idea of ‘pull up a chair and sit with us’.
A huge part! Being able to connect with family members and talk about all the dishes I grew up eating was one of the most fulfilling parts of the process of writing the cookbook. It’s really the entire basis of the cookbook —from the recipes, to the stories—the red thread that connects all the recipes in Family Style is—well—family!
I have so many! One of my favorites is Famous Lemon Chicken. It’s my Grandmothers recipe and I grew up eating it all the time—the perfect mix of tender succulent chicken thats been enrobed in a tangy zippy sauce—the only thing I changed was to add more lemon and condense a few steps—but other than that it’s almost verbatim her recipe. One bite of it brings me right back to her dining table.
