Meet Zander, an artist and textile designer from Nashville based in Brooklyn. Zander’s captivating, graphic, and colorful work is inspired by children’s art, LGBTQ culture, queer craft traditions, and postmodern art. With every product they design, Zoe aims to create fine art-quality textile objects that can be truly lived with, elevating the domestic space and activating a playful sensibility with every use.

How did you start your career as an artist & textile designer?
I’ve always been an artist, and a lot of my work features bright colors, bold motifs, and repetitive patterns. As a teenager, I knew I wanted to go to art school, and when it came time to choose a major, textiles seemed like a natural fit. I studied textiles at RISD, and I got a job as a designer at Todd Oldham Studio when I graduated. I worked there for 4 years, and I learned a ton. That’s when I first had the opportunity to design home textiles and realized how much I love it. I started my own line while I was still working there, and in 2021, I left to work on my business full-time. I love designing for home textiles- I think it’s so special to see how each customer styles my pieces and gives them new life in their own spaces.

What's your favorite part about the New York creative community?
I grew up in Tennessee, and I always wanted to live in New York. I wanted to be in a city with lots of creative people and lots of queer people! It’s such a privilege to have formed connections with so many other artists and designers. I love how often I run into people I know here. Sometimes NYC feels like such a small town!

What's inspiring you right now?
Right now I’m having a great time cooking with all my summer farmer’s market produce- maitake mushrooms, heirloom tomatoes, squash blossoms, striped zucchinis. I’ve been thinking about all the fun shapes, patterns, and fractals in all these fruits and veggies and how they might translate into textile motifs or inspire repeat patterns. Stay tuned!
